Meyer and Atkin both respond to Nathaniel Rich’s focus of “whose to blame” each in their own interesting ways. If these writers were sitting around a table discussing particularly whose to blame, I feel the conversation would go as so. First, I feel Nathaniel Rich would emphasize his belief that no one is to blame except human nature itself. Rich placed a strong focus on humanity’s inability to conceptualize long term effects like those involved in global warming. After Rich gave his opinion, Meyer would argue that a majority of blame should be placed on the Republican party. Meyer may even try and make Rich seem somewhat hypocritical and recite lines from Losing Earth that focus on the negative influence individuals like the Reagen and Bush along with their administration had on the prevention of global warming. After Meyer spoke, Atkin would somewhat agree with Meyer’s argument but lean more towards siding with Rich. Atkin explained in her article that Losing Earth “provides a necessary window into how human nature influenced America’s first big failure to create climate policy”.
